Collagen makes up a whopping 80 percent of our skin, but as we age, our bodies naturally start reducing collagen production.
According to Dr. Shereene Idriss, a board-certified dermatologist, "collagen production decreases by approximately 1% with each year of age after maturity, starting in your early twenties".
"This contributes to sagging and the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines" says Dr. Marchbein, a board-certified dermatologist and a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.
Sun exposure, stress, cigarette smoke and pollution can also accelerate collagen breakdown.
